The Hawaiʻi Implicit Bias Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration focused on conducting research and developing resources that support a more comprehensive understanding of implicit biases operating in Hawaiʻi.
WHAT ARE WE BEING ASKED TO DO?
Visitors on this site are asked to complete Implicit Association Tests (IATs) that are specifically tailored to measure associations and attitudes present in Hawaiʻi’s society. These tests are voluntary and anonymous. The results will be analyzed and reported in aggregate and will not be connected to any single individual. Our study has been reviewed and approved by the University of Hawaiʻi IRB [protocol # 2020-00531].
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The information gathered will provide foundational data for building a research base to understand biases that may be present in Hawaiʻi and, eventually, how they may influence various social systems and sectors like education, criminal justice, and healthcare.
WHO IS DOING THIS RESEARCH?
We are researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi who are active in the fields of law, education, health and psychology interested in understanding how implicit biases operate in the context of Hawaiʻi’s unique and diverse community.
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?
Our team is committed to rigorous science and community-engagement. We are building out our initial research projects first and will expand our education and resource links next to share our work and connect with others. There is much more to come, so come back and visit our site soon!
