Space Designations & Assignment Priorities

SPACE DESIGNATIONS

In an effort to create a supportive and welcoming environment that caters to the needs of different resident populations, Student Housing Services designates applicants for placement in either traditional freshman spaces or non-freshman spaces. Within this context, a subset of beds is made available for each respective population.

Traditional Freshman Spaces
Traditional freshman spaces are geared towards individuals that will be transitioning into university life to ensure residents undergoing similar experiences and challenges can connect with their peers. To be designated for placement in a traditional freshman space, an applicant must have graduated from high school within the academic year prior to their enrollment at UH Mānoa.

Non-Freshman Spaces
Non-Freshman spaces accommodate all other applicants and include a broader range of living options and unit types.

As a general practice, individuals designated for placement in traditional freshman spaces will not be assigned to a room with an individual that has been designated for placement in a non-freshman space. Similarly, applicants are assigned to spaces with individuals that report the same sex identity on their housing application. Individuals interested in the Rainbow Village Residential Learning Program should express this at the time of application.

ASSIGNMENT PRIORITIES

Housing assignment priorities at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa are set by the University of Hawai’i Board of Regents and are codified in Board of Regents Policy (RP) 7.205 – Student Housing. The criteria below apply to all applications received by the on-time deadlines (as described in the General Eligibility Requirements section).

Geographic Considerations
Once applicants have been designated for placement in freshman or non-freshman spaces, a set of geographic criteria is used to sort all on-time applications to determine the order in which housing offers and room assignments will be made.

Hawai'i Residents That Live onNeighbor Islands Non-Hawai'i Residents (US & International) Hawai'i Residentson Oahu that LiveWithin a Reasonable Commuting Distance Hawai'i Residentson Oahu That LiveBeyond a Reasonable Commuting Distance

UH Manoa Entry Status Considerations
A student’s educational need for housing is considered greatest during the first year of college. Within this context, freshman and new undergraduate transfer students enrolled in their first term at UH Mānoa will receive assignment offers prior to those continuing their course of study.

Application Date & Time Considerations
If more than one applicant meets the same criteria as noted above, the date and time Part 1 of the housing application received by Student Housing Services will be used as the third and final criteria to sort on-time applicants.

LATE APPLICATIONS

Late applications received after the on-time application deadline will be sorted strictly based on the date and time an application is received. Assignments will be made on a space available basis only after all on-time applications have been processed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Students who complete all application requirements by the on-time application deadline and do not initially receive a housing offer will automatically be placed on a waitlist for the type of space they are eligible for (traditional freshman or non-freshman).

  • After the start of the academic year, Student Housing Services will continue to extend offers to individuals on the waitlist or to new applicants based on the time and date an application is received in the event the wait list is exhausted.

  • A limited number of rooms may be set aside each year to support university and system enrollment goals and accommodate students with special needs (reserved spaces) as noted in RP 7.205.

  • Full-time students enrolled at the University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu, Honolulu Community College, Leeward Community College, Kapiʻolani Community College or Windward Community College are eligible to apply for housing. However, spaces will only be made available after all eligible full-time University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa students have been assigned.
