Further Investigations: Behavior

  1. Diel vertical migration (or diurnal vertical migration) is a movement pattern observed in many species of organisms in both freshwater and marine systems. Use library and Internet resources to investigate this phenomenon. What species are typically involved? What role does phytoplankton play? What causes this behavior? Why is the U.S. Navy interested in diel vertical migration?

  2. Conduct your own behavioral research experiment using an aquarium aquatic plant. Select a research question that interests you and design appropriate experiments to address this research question. Execute your experiments and present your findings to your classmates. What are the broader implications of your findings?
