6) For the period June 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013: State the assessment question(s) and/or assessment goals. Include the SLOs that were targeted, if applicable.
We targeted Question 1, SLO #3. Familiarity with the mechanics of scientific reporting sufficient to enable students to prepare a publication for a scholary journal and sufficient to enable students to successfully prepare applications for various types of funding to support their reserach. Our curriculum committee identified a need for developement of grant writing skills and is at work creating a class that will become a mandatory graduation equirement. We also continued to evaluate our problem of low attendance in our new CMB 671 Biostatistics class.

This year many students wrote fellowship and grant applications with the help of their mentors and it was noted that our students need to upgrade their skills in this area. A writing course addressing this problem is being created and will be in place by Fall 2014.

1. The Cell and Molecular Biology(CMB) Gradaute Chair and Co-chair and 4 professors as well as the 4 members of the CMB . curriculum committee discussed this problem at meetings over several months. 2. 6 Students that had submitted applications for fellowships and grants and 3 other students contemplating submissions were surveyed and all unanimously agreed that more instruction and guidance was need in this area.

Summarize the actual results.
A course is being created to address the specialized writing needs of our students. It will be available by Fall 2014. Our course, CMB 671 Biostatistics, is now a mandatory graduation requirement for all PhD candidates.
12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.
The new writing course will be carefully evaluated each semester and all graduate students in the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program will be encouraged to apply for various types of funding with full support and guidance from our Graduate Faculty. This is considered a critical skill for our students and this new course will become a graduation requirement for our PhD program.
