Are students well prepared for Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)?

Program evaluation is conducted and a Graduation Objectives Survey is administered to students with questions that address the 7 SLOs listed above (i.e., Life-Long Learning Skills, The Biological Sciences, The Care of Patients, Oral and Written Communication Skills, Populational and Community Health, Professionalism, and Personal Health and Well-Being).

7) State the type(s) of evidence gathered to answer the assessment question and/or meet the assessment goals that were given in Question #6.

Results of the USMLE Step 1 examination for all JABSOM students. This examination is taken at the end of the second year of the MD program.

Findings from the Graduation Objectives Survey are developed into a report.

Approximately 66 students completed the USMLE Step 1 examination.  

Fifty-five students completed the End of 2nd Year (Graduation Objectives Survey) in August 2013.

Summarize the actual results.

100% of JABSOM students received passing scores on the USMLE Step 1. The average score for JABSOM students was above the national average.

Overall, the means obtained from the End of 2nd Year (Graduation Objectives Survey) were generally in a positive direction (i.e., students reported higher means on items 2 years into the program in comparison to their first day of medical school).

12) State how the program used the results or plans to use the results. Please be specific.

The medical school Curriculum Committee reviewed the results of the USMLE Step 1 examination for JABSOM students as well as the End of 2nd Year (Graduation Objectives Survey) findings. Overall, it was felt the scores reflected the students are well prepared for the national licensing examination and reporting a greater ability, over time, towards meeting the SLOs.

13) Beyond the results, were there additional conclusions or discoveries?
This can include insights about assessment procedures, teaching and learning, program aspects and so on.

In recent years, JABSOM students consistently score above the national average on the national licensing examination (USMLE Step 1). This reflects on the hard work and commitment of the students, as well as structure and content of the curriculum, efforts of the faculty, and effectiveness of the program evaluation plan.
