1. Demonstrate basic emprirical knowledge of atmospheric phenomena.
2. Understand the current state of basic theory used to model such phenomena.
3. Ability to conduct novel research on significant problems in atmospheric science with modest support from more advanced scientists.
4. Communicate both orally and in writing at a high level of proficiency.
5. Professional skills to solve real world problems in the field.
6. Ability to conduct independent original research on significant problems in the atmospheric sciences.

For doctoral students, assessment comprises.
1. Two formal seminars presented to full departmental audiences
2. A comprehensive exam which must be taken in the first two years of residence.
3. Within 12 months of the comprehensive must present and defend a written dissertation proposal before the dissertation committee.
4. Must complete an acceptable PhD dissertation embodying original independent research in a public final oral examination.
5. One of more peer-reviewed articles should be submitted based upon the dissertation.
