16) Beyond the results, were there additional conclusions or discoveries? This can include insights about assessment procedures, teaching and learning, and great achievements regarding program assessment in this reporting period.

We feel that course grades and seminar presentation represent reasonable methods for assessing SLOs 3 & 4. The graduate chair montiors these data and advises students and the research memtors when issues arise.
We find it challenging to obtain usable data that allows assessment of SLOs 1, 2 & 5, especially after students have completed coursework but are not yet ready to defend their thesis.
SLO 1 relies on progress as judged by the faculty mentor - we have recently implemented an online questionnaire to help improve communication between students, faculty mentors, and the graduate chair, which should aid in identifying underperforming students.
SLO2 relies on communication of results to the thesis committee, which rarely happens prior to the thesis defense. We have discussed the possibility of implementing progress report meetings beginning in the 3rd year, but faculty are resistant to the increased workload and the distraction from research efforts.
SLO5 relies on submission of peer-reviewed manuscripts, which usually happens around the same time as submission of the thesis.
