The faculty associated with the Botany BA and BS degrees worked to develop new and comprehensive assessment procedures: SLOs, rubrics, and curriculum map.

A multiple choice exam (tied to SLO 1) was administered to Botany BA students in BOT 400 in 2019. The number of Botany BA students in the class is unknown (but probably no more than 5). The exams cannot be located.

15) Please briefly describe how the program used its findings/results.

The School of Life Sciences was formed in 2020 by merging 3 departments, and supports 8 BA/BS programs, of which 5 enroll 25-50 students. These 8 programs had 4 different sets of program SLOs and assessment procedures. The 5 small programs have historically struggled to collect assessment data. Life Sciences has held extensive discussions to adopt a common set of SLOs, rubrics, and other assessment procedures for all 8 programs. This will enable assessment of students from the smaller degree programs as they pass through the core Life Sciences courses.  It will also allow comparison of student progress across all degree programs. The goal is to continue working toward common standards and procedures that will allow all programs to provide all Life Sciences undergraduate students with experiences of similar quality.

In addition to adopting new SLOs, the Botany BA program:

  • has nearly completed a new and more realistic curriculum map,
  • is completing procedures to collect student work consistently from key courses in our curriculum, so they can be combined across years to yield meaningful sample sizes,
  • is working with colleagues from across Life Sciences to adopt common rubrics for assessment (e.g., AACU rubrics),
  • is working to make assessment an activity that involves a larger proportion of the faculty
