8) Briefly explain the assessment activities that took place since November 2018.
This was already noted on the previous page. We developed a new process for replacing the "qualifying exam" at the end of year 2 which allows our students to propose a dissertation topic. Along with this we developed a thorough assessment rubric to evaluate the first two years of work to assess whether students are ready to pursue dissertation research. Along with this we are discussing the addition of new courses and revision of some of the other courses.

In Spring 2020 there were 4 students who were being evaluated to pass the qualifying process. For each student we considered grades, evaluation of the graduate oversight committee on their research, and input from approximately 12 faculty members who had worked closely with each student. We have 41 students, 30 have passed this stage and are working on dissertations. The first year students in Spring 2020 (7) all met with the grad chair to discuss their progress toward having a successful qualifying process.

Of the 4 students advancing to candidacy, 100% achieved each SLO.

This threshold is used both to advance the students so that they can propose a PhD dissertation, but also to help the faculty better refine the process for evaluating students and helping them achieve succcess.

Spring 2020 was the first time we used the rubric and it workds well.
