8) Briefly explain the assessment activities that took place since November 2018.
In March of 2019 and 2020, the doctoral faculty held its annual Theatre and Dance Graduate Student Research Symposium. Each year, three doctoral students in residence presented public papers which had been prepared with the mentoring of their faculty advisors. The students fielded questions from the attendees.
Faculty met in May 2019 and May 2020 for its annual assessment meeting, reviewing progress of all PhD candidates in all aspects of their studies: coursework, language examination, comprehensive exam preparation, dissertation proposal preparation, teaching experience, and progress toward the dissertation. Plans were formulated to assist any students who were judged not to be meeting standards in all of these areas.
The graduate chair was informed of successes and obstacles for individual students for all doctoral progress benchmarks, such as language exam, Human Studies approval, comprehensive examinations, proposal defense, dissertation completion, and dissertation defense.
9) What types of evidence did the program use as part of the assessment activities checked in question 7? (Check all that apply.)

10) State the number of students (or persons) who submitted evidence that was evaluated. If applicable, please include the sampling technique used.
6 students presented papers at our annual research symposium, giving faculty evaluators the opportunity to assess their research, writing, and presentation skills. 4 students progressed to ABD status during this period, and their comprehensive exam results were used as evidence in the revision of the departmental exam requirements.
11) Who interpreted or analyzed the evidence that was collected? (Check all that apply.)

13) Summarize the results from the evaluation, analysis, interpretation of evidence (checked in question 12). For example, report the percentage of students who achieved each SLO.
We currently have 14 enrolled PhD students at various stages in their process. It is not possible to apply percentages for their achievement of SLOs as each student is at a different stage.
Percentage of SLO achievement for the 6 students who received their PhD during this time period (one student received the MA instead due to a change in research plans)
SLO 1 83%
SLO 2 100%
SLO 3 100%
SLO 4 100%
SLO 5 100%

15) Please briefly describe how the program used its findings/results.
At its annual May meetings, the doctoral faculty made minor clarifying revisions to its “Guide for Theatre Ph.D. Students,” based on assessments of students progress.
In December 2019, the doctoral faculty used past assessments of comprehensive examinations to make significant changes to its comprehensive examinations. The faculty voted to move from a series of 9 separate proctored closed-book examinations to five open-book questions to be completed in a two-week period; the details of this new examination model were further revised in February 2020.
16) Beyond the results, were there additional conclusions or discoveries? This can include insights about assessment procedures, teaching and learning, and great achievements regarding program assessment in this reporting period.
