8) Briefly explain the assessment activities that took place.
The full faculty meet at the end of every semester to discuss student progress. We discuss every student in the PhD program with regards to their progress in our SLOs. Performance metrics brought to bear in this discussion include student grades, performance in class, and performance on other degree milestones (e.g. Qualifying papers, dissertation progress). The goal of these meetings is to provide faculty with a fully-informed view of each student's progress. At least once a year the Graduate Chair sends a letter to each student informing them of the result of these meetings, including informing students who may not be progressing satisfactorily about how they can improve their performance.
In fall semester of 2018 we formed a Program Assessment Committee to undertake some necessary changes to the procedures for our departments comprhenesive exam, which consists of two qualifying papers. The changes include streamlining and clarifying the process for proposing, researching, and writing the qualifying paprs, with the aim of better reinforcing the program SLOs.

15) Please briefly describe how the program used the results.
Letters were sent to the students regarding their status. The annual evaluations is also used to identify specific student problems (e.g. academic writing problems, English language difficulties, difficulties with analytic techniques, etc.). Students’ advisors discuss these with the students and remedies are recommended.
As mentioned earlier, in fall 2018 our department formed a Program Assessment Committee to work in improving SLO achievement based on our May 2018 annual meeting.
16) Beyond the results, were there additional conclusions or discoveries? This can include insights about assessment procedures, teaching and learning, and great achievements regarding program assessment in this reporting period.
We are still working through improving program assessment. In the next year we hope to reevaluate our SLOs and curriculum maps, and develop new rubrics for the degree milestones to help with the assessment procedure.
