Japan Studies Association will hold professional development workshop
The Japan Studies Association will be conducting a professional development workshop in Hokkaido led by Asian Studies faculty member Lonny Carlile from May 28 to June 6, 2024, entitled “Hokkaido 2024: Diversity, Transformation, Renewal.” As a cosponsor, the UH Center for Japanese Studies has arranged for special consideration in the application process for UHM faculty, instructors, and graduate students. Participants will be accepted on a rolling basis from December 20 onward. Details on the workshop and application forms can be found here.
The workshop should be of particular interest to faculty, instructors and graduate students who are interested in gaining a grounding in Ainu Studies or in comparative indigenous studies. The workshop will feature:
- two days at the newly opened Ainu National Museum.
- three full days working with staff from the Nibutani Ainu Cultural Museum and the Biratori Town Ainu Policy Promotion Section in seminars and in field site visits related to current efforts to revive Ainu culture and landscapes. Related videos with English subtitles can be found here.
- overnight stay at Lake Toyako geopark to learn more about the Hokkaido’s volatile geology.
- a closing seminar and banquet in Hakodate, after which participants may sign up for an optional two-day tour, pursue independent travel plans or return home.
For any questions or concerns you might have, please contact Prof. Carlile at lonny@hawaii.edu.
Applications will be considered by January 25, and monthly until all spots are filled.
