Admission Requirements and Procedures

If you are applying to one of our graduate programs, your academic record should demonstrate a broad knowledge of the Humanities and/or the Social Sciences and an emphasis on American culture.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Bear in mind that you are applying both to the University of Hawai‘i’s Graduate Division and to the American Studies program. If you are an International Student, additional application materials must be submitted.

Submit the following to Graduate Division

  • Admission application
  • Application fee
  • Official academic record/transcripts
  • Official GRE scores (optional)

International Applicants must meet the following additional requirements

  • Submit either official TOEFL or IELTS results to the UH Graduate Admissions Office (less than two years old at time of application).  The minimum test scores are as follows:
    • TOEFL – Required minimum score of iBT 90.  For teaching assistantship applicants, minimum scores are 100 (iBT), with subtest scores of 25 for listening and 25 for speaking.
    • IELTS – Required minimum score of 6.5. For teaching assistantship  applicants, the minimum score is 7.0.
  • Meet the minimum level of study for your region
  • Provide required identification and financial information.

Online Application

Applicants who submit online applications may use the Graduate Application Documents Upload Website to submit supporting application materials

  • Statement of Objectives (approx. 1,000 words, typed)
  • Letters of recommendation (2 for MA applications, 3 for PhD applications)
  • All MA and PhD applicants must submit a sample of their academic writing
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts (Official transcripts must be submitted to Graduate Division Student Services prior to enrolling at UHM)
