Class overview: This course will introduce you to the issues, concepts and research methodology of developmental psychology, with a focus on the adult years and aging. Age-related cognitive, physical, behavioral and socio-emotional changes will be examined from psychological perspectives. Emphasis is placed on the development of knowledge about aging, through consideration of the methods of developmental research and through critiques of empirical studies of key topics in the psychology of aging.

Student responsibilities and course evaluation: All material and class activities will be conducted online. Students will participate in weekly discussions and aging exercises as well as two exams. Aging exercises include simulating physical changes associated with the aging process, interviewing an older adult and a life projection paper.

The professor: I have instructed PSY 342 online numerous times at UH Manoa. I am a graduate of the Clinical Studies program at UH Manoa. My dissertation explored death attitudes and various mental and health factors in nursing home residents with medical comorbidities. I have worked closely with geriatric, hospice, palliative and oncology patients and caregivers in various mental health settings. I truly enjoy teaching this course and look forward to providing students with a supportive learning environment.
