THE CENTER FOR KOREAN STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAIʻI AT MĀNOA PRESENTS:

The 3rd Drs. Sung-Chul Yang and Daisy Lee Yang Lecture Series

"THE POLITICS OF TIME AND REMEMBRANCE AS EMANCIPATORY"

  • When: November 16, 2023 at 3:00pm-5:00pm
  • Where: CKS Auditorium

This presentation explores the politics of time that the regime of discontinuity of post-1987 South  Korea engages in and its historiographical and ethical implications. The author characterizes articulations or narratives that erode, distort, or silence a certain kind of memory as constituting the regime of discontinuity. Informed by Walter Benjamin’s view of historical temporality, she suggests poetics of remembrance as an alternative. To make amends for the previously unacknowledged suffering of the past generation and to make efforts to continue the unconcluded struggles of the past is to open up a possibility for true emancipation of society.

The Distinguished Speaker, Dr. Namhee Lee, UCLA:

Dr. Lee is a Professor of modern Korean history and Director of the Center for Korean Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her recent publication include Memory Construction and the Politics of Time in Neoliberal South Kore (Duke University Press, 2022).
