My students were intrigued by the soda and scientific reasoning activity and talked about doing it at home. I demonstrated the activity first and set the stage for small group work. At the end of the activity, students had to respond to one of the "Activity Questions" (p. 3 of lesson plan). We discussed all the activity questions as a whole class.

Sorry for the late post. I recently did the Module One: Standing Wave Tank activity with my 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8th graders at a small private, Christian school in Manoa. First, we borrowed the wave tank from the UH TSI program (thank you Alyssa, Joanna, Kanesa and Lisa.) We carried the tank 3 blocks to our campus, inside our school, up 3 flights stairs to the Science Lab. Then, we filled it with 1 gallon bottles (because the 5 gallon containers were too heavy for the keiki to carry back and forth to the sink.) We filled it to the 2/3 full markings.

I did the wave tank activity with grades 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 8th grade at our private school on Oahu. We borrowed the wave tank from the UH TSIA program. First, we had to carry it 3 blocks from UH, inside our school and up to the third floor. Then, we had to fill it with water from a sink. It took a long, long time because although we had a 5 gallon container it was too heavy for the children to carry. So, we filled it with many hands and many trips back and forth using 1 gallon containers.

I was VERY intimidated by the amount of setup required by the activity, so I tried thinking of how I could break the activity into chunks, and even into different stations. I also am implementing this activity with all of my classes, so I knew I would have to do much of the setup beforehand due to lack of bags for all classes.

This was the last of the Module One lessons. The 5, 6, 7 & 8th graders tried the Vertical Current Flow activity this week. It was a fun experiment to connect with the Ocean Literacy Principles. We used clear, wide mouthed Gatorade bottles that worked really well for this activity.
