I like how you introduced the activity to the class before with the alcohal/water demo, then breaking the class up into managable groups, using the density word problems to integrate mathematics, and You tube videos for differentiation in learning. Great job!!! Was all the prep worth while in the end?

I think it was worth it. The alcohol/water demo combined with notes on density and relative density was key to helping most of the students have a better grasp on the concept of density. My main goal for the density word problems was for all students to have the density equation burned into their mind, and it seems to have worked...most of the students were able to verbally tell me the density equation after doing the workbook. The YouTube videos were helpful in having students see how density differences create water movement, thus leading to ocean currents.

I like the idea of bringing them up one group at a time. More individualized attention to ensure they learn the concepts.

I'm interested in how you integrated math and science with this activity. Do you plan to do this for all of your lessons, or was this activity better suited for math integration? I also like how you used small groups and the You tube video. Great job!

Hi Diane. Truthfully, my main motivation for doing the density workbook on the side was to keep the students busy while I called groups up to do the lab one by one. However, I chose the math integration due to the emphasis our school puts on that issue, as well as the fact that I just really wanted the students to have lots of practice with calculating density, and understanding how/why the equation is derived.
