Academy for Creative Media

UH Mānoa’s Academy for Creative Media (ACM) empowers and educates students so they can tell their stories through digital media. The Media Center is located in the Sinclair Library at 2425 Campus Road.  The facility is dedicated to all areas of digital production and animation.

Accountancy

The School of Accountancy (SOA) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH-Mānoa) is guided by its mission to provide students with an accounting education relevant to a technologically advanced global economy, advance accounting knowledge through research, and instill in students a sense of moral, ethical, and professional obligations to society.

Anthropology

At the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, the Department of Anthropology is strongly committed to critical inquiry, advocacy and educational outreach.Our students are encouraged to explore and integrate approaches to human behavior, culture, and society across disciplinary subfields and specializations.

Art & Art History

The Department of Art and Art History is one of the largest departments at UH Mānoa and the only master’s degree granting program in the visual arts in the State of Hawai‘i. Hundreds of students from other disciplines enroll in our art studio and art history classes to fulfill their university requirements, for the pleasure of exploring a creative medium, and/or learning the richness of global artistic traditions.

Asian Studies

At UH Manoa, Asian Studies covers a broad geographical arc including South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. The approach to the study of these interrelated regions is interdisciplinary, taught by faculty trained in the geography, history, anthropology, political science, sociology, language and literature, ethnomusicology, performing arts, and urban and regional planning of Asia.

East Asian Languages & Literature

The Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures (EALL) is the largest department of its kind in the country and offers a curriculum unparalleled in its breadth and scope in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language, linguistics, literature, and culture. EALL is the largest instructional unit in the College of Arts, Languages, and Letters (CALL) in terms of the number of faculty, majors, SSH (student semester hours), staff, and student enrollment.

Economics

The UH-Manoa Economics Department excels in numerous fields including Environmental, Resources, Labor, Health, Development, Economic History, Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Theory, and International Economics. Our Economics Department offers one of the world’s leading graduate programs, providing theoretical, empirical, and historical foundations for the study of economic policies across the globe.

Educational Foundations

The Department of Educational Foundations is committed to the professional and personal intellectual growth of educators and laypersons who wish to broaden and deepen their understanding of educational problems, questions, issues, and controversies. Areas of study include education policy studies, educational leadership, critical pedagogy, multicultural education, and more.

English

The English Department is one of the largest in the UHM College of Arts, Languages & Letters (CALL) with nearly 200 undergraduate majors, more than 70 graduate students, and over 20 faculty members. The Department is the site of dynamic creative and scholarly work and, with more award-winning teachers than any other department at UHM, has a demonstrated commitment to teaching at all levels of the curriculum.

Family & Consumer Sciences

Our mission is to contribute to developing resilient families, businesses, and communities. We seek to serve as a catalyst for long-term family, community, and policy changes that strengthen and promote our stakeholders, and to improve their quality of life through our research/scholarship, instruction, and extension service throughout Hawai‘i and the Pacific Basin.

Finance & Economic Institutions

As one of the most popular programs at the College, the finance department has an excellent track record of preparing its graduates for success in the complex financial global markets. The department offers an undergraduate major in finance that provides students with the flexibility to choose from six tracks. ​​The Department also offers a Master of Science in Finance (MSF) degree.

Geography

The Geography and Environment department was founded in 1932 and is consistently ranked among the top programs in the US. Our faculty have expertise across the breadth of the discipline in environmental geography, human geography, and geospatial information science, focusing on Asia and the Pacific.

Hamilton Library, Asia Collection

The Asia Collection at Hamilton Library at the University of Hawai’i Dates from 1920, when the Board of Regents established the Japanese Department at the University of Hawaii. In 1930, the Oriental Institute was established to focus on the study of China, India and Japan. In 1962, the newly established East-West Center absorbed, with the University’s agreement, the vernacular materials of the Oriental Library, and expanded the scope to include Korea and all countries in South and Southeast Asia.

History

The Department of History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa offers degree programs at the BA, MA, and PhD levels and is composed of award-winning teachers and researchers. Our geographical location facilitates our expertise in Asian, Hawaiian, Pacific, and World histories, as well as the American and European pasts. History majors find success in a variety of careers from teaching, research, and advocacy, to government service, journalism, law and business.

Information Technology Management

The Information Technology Management (ITM) Department spearheads this area through undergraduate and graduate programs, preparing students to thrive in a digital environment. Through basic and applied research, the department creates and disseminates knowledge of the design, development, and management of information technology.

School of Law

The William S. Richardson School of Law challenges students to grow professionally and intellectually, with a rich and diverse curriculum. The Law School is proud to maintain excellence in diversity, clinical programs, and scholarship which bring us national recognition. We lead in Environmental Law, Native Hawaiian law, Pacific-Asian legal Studies, and International & Comparative Law.

Marketing

Department of Marketing at the Shidler College of Business, University of Hawaii at Manoa provides course work that helps students learn how to effectively and efficiently manage components of the marketing mix: product, price, distribution, and promotion.

Philosophy

Since the 1930s the Philosophy Department at the University of Hawaii has taken the lead in establishing the legitimacy and importance of Asian philosophical traditions. The Department of Philosophy at University of Hawaii at Manoa provides on-going educational opportunities to those students seeking advanced degrees.

Political Science

The Department of Political Science focuses on the study of political power. A truly international department, our students and faculty are diverse, and we embody UH’s mission to be a “globally-connected Hawaiian place of learning.” We prioritize small student-centered classes that catalyze critical thinking and promote effective communication.

Psychology

The Department of Psychology at UH Mānoa was established in 1920. Our department continues to be a leader in training exceptional graduate and undergraduate students. Our department is also home to outstanding faculty whose breadth provides students with many opportunities to explore their scholarly interests.

Religion

The Department of Religions & Ancient Civilizations (RLAC) is dedicated to fostering a humanistic understanding of religious traditions and classical cultures more generally. The Religious Traditions Program specializes in the religious traditions of Asia and the Pacific.

Second Language Studies

Second Language Studies (SLS) is an interdisciplinary field that addresses the learning, teaching, and use of second (or multiple) languages from educational, linguistic, psychological, sociological, and anthropological perspectives. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are relevant to students interested in ESL and TESOL.

School of Social Work

The mission of the Department of Social Work is to provide educational excellence that advances social work with its focus on social justice. The principal responsibility is the generation, transmission, and application of knowledge for the global enterprise with special attention to Native Hawaiian, other Pacific Islander, and Asian populations in our state and region.

Sociology

The Department of Sociology at UH Mānoa examines patterns and dynamics of social relations, while paying special attention to issues of social justice. The department covers many major dimensions of sociology and over time has developed academic expertise and excellence in societal domains.

Travel Industry Management

The School of Travel Industry Management (TIM) at the University of Hawaiʻi’s Mānoacampus is recognized as a leading educational institution focusing on hospitality, tourism, and transportation management. TIM pioneered the concept of integrating all aspects of the travel industry under a single discipline.
