Student Spotlight: Daniel Gimbrone
Daniel Gimbrone (he/him) is a first year MA candidate in Asian Studies. He answered a few questions for us about his research and why he chose UH at Mānoa:
What is your academic background?
I did my undergrad degree back home in Buffalo, NY. I double majored in Asian studies and Japanese linguistics.
What are your research interests?
My research is focused on the ways that gay Japanese men create identity through language. My other research interests include gay erotic art in Japan, Shinto, and tea ceremony.
Why did you choose UH at Mānoa’s Asian Studies program?
I was initially attracted to Hawai’i due to it’s large Japanese community. My work is sociolinguistic, and I think it’s imperative to engage with the communities you are researching. UH itself has many professors and classes that can provide a lot of good insight relevant to my very multidisciplinary work!
What do you like to do outside of school?
Before returning to school at 28, I was a songwriter for Universal Music Canada for a little over a decade. I continue to produce my own music and DJ outside outside of my academic work! Other than that, I enjoy anime and video games. I’m also looking to into martial arts classes. If anyone has recommendations, please let me know!
Anything else about yourself you’d like to share?
I spent the summer studying and living at the International Christian University in Mitaka, Tokyo! It was an absolutely unforgettable experience.
