Student Testimonials

Christina Geisse

The Asian Studies Program was incredible because most professors were undertaking their own research, passionate about their subject of study, and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students. It felt fresh and profound at the same time. Inspiring!

I was able to delve deep and focus on the areas of Asian Studies that truly interested me, and therefore gained a much more thorough and developed understanding of my fields of interest, which are applicable to my current career path. Also, the professors are extremely helpful and want their students to succeed. They were very supportive both while I was at UH and after I graduated.

Incoming MAIA student Lauren Markle was featured in UH News for the reasons that spurred her to pursue a Masters in Asian International Affairs (MAIA): fighting anti-Asian racism, which she experienced as an undergraduate student on the US mainland.

“There are many people who have committed microaggressions out of ignorance rather than malice…I believe a part of the solution to that is to have more exposure to diverse peoples and their cultures.”

Lauren markle, quoted in UH NEws

We agree with Lauren that an Asian Studies degree is an excellent way to gain more exposure to diverse peoples, cultures, issues, and points of view.

The fast-growing MAIA program emphasizes current affairs in Asia, and offers many opportunities for students to collaborate with community organizations toward solving real-world problems. Anti-Asian racism is an important one among them, and we welcome Lauren to our graduate program.
