Yilan Hu

Yilan Hu was born and raised in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. She is a Ph.D. candidate in the
Department of American Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Prior to entering the
Ph.D. program at UHM in fall 2018, she received a B.A. in English from University of Electronic
Science and Technology of China and a M.A. in English language and literature from Sichuan
University. She has areas of specialization in Asian American Studies, U.S. Women’s History, and
Intersectionality. Currently, she is working on her dissertation, which explores the ways in
which race, gender, sexuality, and nation shape the notion of kinship in the case of U.S.-China
adoption. She was recently awarded Dissertation Fellowship by the Department of American
Studies for Spring 2024. She has rich experience in teaching online, hybrid, and in-person
classes. She has taught AMST 202: American Experience: Culture and the Arts from Fall 2019 to

Spring 2023. She is also a student affiliate in East-West Center. In her free time, she enjoys
running, hiking, and playing the Ocarina. She has finished several full marathons and half
marathons.
