Biography
Suzanna Reiss is an Associate Professor in the History Department at UH Mānoa. Her areas of expertise include the history of capitalism, US foreign relations, policing, drug control, and imperial formations. Her book, We Sell Drugs: The Alchemy of US Empire (University of California Press, 2014) examined the post-WWII establishment of a US-led international drug control regime and its entanglements with the pharmaceutical industry and the consolidation of US imperial power. She is currently working on a number of projects. One study addresses the introduction of drug technologies into policing and parole practices in the United States in the 1950’s and 60’s. Another project focuses on the politics of public health in Cuba and the United States in the context of Cuban revolution, US economic embargo, and battles over access to medicines and health care. The study provides a window onto Cold War confrontation where efforts to control the commercial flow of drugs became a weapon for waging war and grounding competing assertions of sovereignty. She teaches a wide range of classes including courses on American Empire, US Foreign Relations, Sugar and Power, the Cold War, and World History.
