Congratulations to our Department Chair and Graduates!

We are delighted and proud to announce that Unpredictable Agents: The Making of Japan’s Americanists during the Cold War and Beyond, edited by our very own Department Chair, Mari Yoshihara, and published by UH Press, is now available. This is a book of twelve personal essays by Japanese scholars of American Studies—including three scholars from Okinawa—who talk about how they encountered “America” and came to dedicate their careers to studying it. It is both an engaging and moving pieces of life writing as well as a unique look into the evolution of American Studies in both the U.S. and Japan. It also includes two essays by graduates of our department—Sanae Nakatani and Yohei Sekiguchi—and Ikue Kina (University of the Ryukyus) and Yujin Yaguchi (University of Tokyo).
