Kelly Guo

Kelly Guo is a PhD student in American Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has previously received her BA from the University of California at Berkeley with a double major in Anthropology and American Studies and a minor in Medieval Studies, and her MA in American Studies from Columbia University. Before beginning work on her PhD, Kelly taught at the University of Hawaii at West Oahu under the Early College and He Paepae Aloha programs as a lecturer for History 151 and 152. Her academic focus is medieval European history and representations of this past within American popular culture and media, and how these portrayals can affect consumers’ perception of race, identity, nationalism, and religion; in particular, the connection between white supremacy and a romanticized medieval European past. Within American media, her favorite areas to study are film, video games, and heavy metal music. Outside of school, she also enjoys cooking, cross-stitching, and playing with cats.
