Flowering Vascular Plant Families

The sequence of families on this page follows the phylogenetic outline of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, APG II (Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society 141: 399-436 - 2003) which is an updated refinement of APG I (1998) .  In basic outline it is very similar to the sequence adopted by Judd et al. (2002) yet the tabular form differs conspicuously in that orders and families are presented alphabetically within the major clades.  Families distinguished by an asterisk have not been assigned to an order, pending further resolution of relationships. Families enclosed in brackets with a plus sign, [+family], are considered acceptable, monophyletic alternatives to the broader family cicumscription (favored by APGII) that immediately precedes them in the list. @Rafflesiaceae, listed with "taxa of uncertain position" by APGII is here included in the Malpighiales, in line with recent findings.
