Elaeocarpaceae

Each "thumbnail" image below is linked to a larger photograph.

Elaeocarpus bifidus, Elaeocarpaceae, kalia, endemic to Hawaii.  The reddish, malformed floral parts ("witches' broom") are the result of infestation by mites.
Elaeocarpus grandis, blue marble tree. Tree, native to Australia where it is valued for its timber. The fruits, which look like blue marbles, are edible (reportedly tasting like dates) and the blue seeds are used in seed craft.  Note appendaged anthers in the image at far right.
