I advertised around that I would be doing fish printing to teach my students about the form and function of fish body types. I was hoping for some visitors and we got them. Not only did my class print and love it, the 8th grade science teacher came to watch and the department head came to do my quarterly observation to see how I would relate the two topics of art and evolution. I also had my 'coach' and the two others come with their own paper to do some prints. The students much preferred the 'real' fish and griped when they had to use the rubber ones.
Which of the scientific language words from the target activity did you find your students had the most difficult time with?
A very visual way to see how change can occur in a population. Making a graph just drives the point home. Very easy to do with paperclips or a bag of beans, etc.
This activity is an excellent way to engage students in learning the form and function of the external anatomy fish. My students remained engaged throughout the activity.
to get students to bring in what they really know, and build that community of learners with a non threatening topic. things really got exciting when it came time to look at the attributes of what a fish is and compare what they created as their initial criteria. wow they were surprised and way interested
I started with What is alive? then they had to draw a fish and its parts for homework. They thought that was the best homework they ever had and most of them did it before they left the class. It really got them motivated to learn more about fish the next day!
I taught this lesson to my 9th grade Marine Science students. They were really excited about the topic of bacteria and antibiotics, which lead to a discussion of fungus and prescription drugs.
This is a great activity with kids for making id cards and use in dichotomous keys and a great art project to boot.
not really sure how this is going to go over with the scheduled walk through on the day that i plan this activity........oh well, i'm sure that'll be an interesting conversation.
i haven't completed this lesson yet and i wonder how am i going to explain this in a administrative "walk through" that is planned for the same day as i plan this activity?
