Student Testimonials

Christina Geisse

The Asian Studies Program was incredible because most professors were undertaking their own research, passionate about their subject of study, and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students. It felt fresh and profound at the same time. Inspiring!

I was able to delve deep and focus on the areas of Asian Studies that truly interested me, and therefore gained a much more thorough and developed understanding of my fields of interest, which are applicable to my current career path. Also, the professors are extremely helpful and want their students to succeed. They were very supportive both while I was at UH and after I graduated.

Upcoming Talk by Dr. Giulio Pugliese: “Japan’s Grand Strategy: A Window on Great Power Politics in the 21st Century”

Date: Thursday, February 27, 4:30 PM
Venue: Tokioka Room (Moore 319)
Reception: To follow

The Department of Asian Studies is pleased to announce an upcoming lecture by Dr. Giulio Pugliese, Lecturer in Strategic Communications at King’s College London and Director of the EU-Asia Project at the European University Institute. In his talk, titled “Japan’s Grand Strategy: A Window on Great Power Politics in the 21st Century,” Dr. Pugliese will explore Japan’s evolving approach to China, examining how the rise of China has shaped Japan’s foreign and security policies.

Abstract:
The rise of China in East Asia has fuelled the hopes and kindled the insecurities of many of its neighbours. This presentation tackles the wider implications of China’s rise by examining Japan’s approach to the People’s Republic, because it is symptomatic of region-wide, if not global, trends. Understanding Japan’s China policy offers a unique window into the complex interplay and links among economic, political, and security dynamics of the Asia-Pacific region, with implications for the United States and US-China relations. The presentation argues that the Japanese government has responded to the structural change of the East Asian regional system, centred on China’s ascendance and US relative decline, with strategies in line with the preferences of sitting prime ministers and their foreign policy entourage. The presentation will shine a light on the impact of an evolving decision-making process behind post-war Japanese foreign and security policy within the context of trilateral Japan-China-US interactions, and with an accent on the transformative premierships of Abe Shinzō.

Dr. Pugliese’s expertise in Sino-Japanese relations and his recent research, for which he was awarded the 2023 Nakasone Incentive Award, will provide a unique perspective on the complexities of global power politics.

Join us for this insightful lecture, followed by a reception.
