Call for Papers: 2016 SPAS Graduate Student Conference – ABSTRACT DEADLINE EXTENSION

The School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) welcomes papers, performances, and panel proposals for its 27th annual graduate student conference. The conference will be held at the Center for Korean Studies on the UHM campus in Honolulu, HI on March 16-18, 2016. The theme this year is “FROM UNCHARTED WATERS TO FAMILIAR SHORES: NAVIGATING THE MYRIAD AND DIVERGENT CONCEPTIONS OF ASIA.”
As this year’s theme indicates, we are interested in accepting papers, performances, and panel proposals that continue, change, and/or contest disciplinary and regional approaches to the study of the Asia/Pacific. With this goal in mind, we also encourage those with a background in the arts to apply with performance or paper proposals.
We are especially looking for papers that:
- Involve any original research in all areas of Asia and Asian Studies
- Incorporate interdisciplinary methods and frameworks
- Engage comparative studies or transnationalism
- Explore new and emerging trends in Asian Studies
- Critically re-examine existing methodologies and frameworks
- Present Asian performance practices
Please complete the application form according to the listed guidelines and instructions, and submit it by FEBRUARY 1, 2016. The form may be accessed HERE.
Additionally, all accepted papers/panels will have discussants, so presenters should be prepared to submit their papers by FEBRUARY 15, 2016.
Abstract submission deadline: FEBRUARY 1, 2016
The keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Theodore C. Bestor, Ph.D, from Harvard University.
There will be awards for “best paper” in the following areas:
- Best Japan Paper
- Best Korea Paper
- Best Southeast Asia Paper
A limited number of partial travel grants to the conference site may be available.
