MAAS Student Hla Moe Tara Hlaing Attends AAS 2025 with Departmental Award Support
The Department of Asian Studies supported MAAS student Hla Moe Tara Hlaing’s attendance at the 2025 Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio (March 13-16) through a $1,500 Asian Studies Student Research and Creative Activities Award.
At the conference with over 3,300 international participants, Tara actively engaged with diverse sessions while focusing on current scholarship and presentation techniques. She strategically planned her schedule to attend panels relevant to her research interests, though admitted to “feeling a bit greedy at times leaving one panel halfway through just to catch another. There was just so much to learn.”
Beyond absorbing content, Tara observed how seasoned scholars structure presentations, use visual aids effectively, and manage time constraints. She also noted the important role of panel chairs in facilitating engaging discussions. “As a future presenter, these observations were incredibly useful. I now have a clearer idea of how to prepare and participate in academic panels with confidence.”
Tara attended a mentoring session led by Dr. Shane J. Barter on preparing for post-graduate academic careers, finding it informative for future planning despite being geared toward PhD students. A conference highlight was connecting with Burma studies and Southeast Asian specialists, leading to her joining the Burma Studies Group and significantly expanding her academic network.
“Attending AAS was more than just an academic opportunity—it was a reaffirmation of why I chose this path,” Tara reflected. “I’m deeply thankful for the department’s continued support, which allowed me to fully focus on the experience without financial stress.”
The Department congratulates Tara on her successful participation and professional development at this premier Asian Studies conference.
