Student Testimonials

Christina Geisse

The Asian Studies Program was incredible because most professors were undertaking their own research, passionate about their subject of study, and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students. It felt fresh and profound at the same time. Inspiring!

I was able to delve deep and focus on the areas of Asian Studies that truly interested me, and therefore gained a much more thorough and developed understanding of my fields of interest, which are applicable to my current career path. Also, the professors are extremely helpful and want their students to succeed. They were very supportive both while I was at UH and after I graduated.

MAAS student Celia Langford a John Young Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to second-year MAAS student Celia Langford on being named a 2024 John Young Scholarship Recipient!! Celia is one of nine graduate students to receive the $8,000 prize.

In her research, Celia is exploring how East Asian aesthetics may be applied to Western gallery spaces, in the interest of complicating a linear experience of time and enriching visitor relationships with art. Mark your calendars for the exhibition based on her research, which features the work of Chinese contemporary painter Zhang Bo – opening May 2nd in the Art Building Graduate Gallery

John Young was a dominant figure in Hawaii’s art circles for 60 years. His artwork was known for its dynamic verve and fluid energy, whether in paintings of his signature prancing horses, coastal landscapes, or sketches. Today, Young’s works grace Hawaii’s homes, businesses, schools, and museums. The John Young Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing studies related to the arts. —UHM CALL
