Fall 2023 Schedule – Dates and Times

Swim Test Policy

All SRS water based program participants must take a basic swimming test before signing up for classes and activities. This will include but not be limited to the following: Body Boarding Stand Up Paddling, Kayaking, Surfing, Sailing, Snorkeling, SCUBA (has its own test given on the 1st day of the class) The swim test will be given by the UH SRS Life Guard staff at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex during the SRS Rec Swim time. The test will include: 50 meter/Yard swim any stroke, 3 minutes treading water or survival float 1 surface dive under a lane line.

SCUBA

Discover the Underwater beauty of the Pacific. Receive a SCUBA Schools

International SSI Open Water Certification upon completion of the

course. Classes are taught at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex on

campus. Participants MUST be able to swim and provide their own mask,

fins, snorkel, and transportation to the weekend dive spots. SCUBA Class

sign up only at the Lower Campus Office Athletics Building Rm 200.

$275 UHM Student & WRC Members, $295 Faculty, Staff, & Guest (must be a guest of UH participant).

Beginner Surfing

Learn the water sport of Hawai’i! Please stop by our lower campus office Rm 200 in the Athletic Complex for information or call 808 956 6468. You must be able to swim and provide your own transportation.

Stand-Up Paddling

Learn the basics of Stand-Up Paddling, one of the newest, fastest growing water sports.

Participants must be able to swim. Transportation and equipment are provided.

Sign up at the lower campus SUP office only.

Body Boarding

Body Boarding is enjoyed at most beaches in the State of Hawai’i. Come learn the basics of body boarding and water safety at a beach with shore break. Transportation and equipment are provided. Participants must be able to swim. Body boarding is limited to UH students, faculty, staff, and their guests.

Hiking

Explore the island of Oahu. Join organized hikes to scenic locations.

Transportation provided.

$7 UHM Student & WRC Members, $12 Faculty, Staff, & Guest (must be a guest of UH participant).

Kayaking Excursions

Excursions are lead to different parts of Oahu and are intended for the beginner kayaker. Learn kayaking and water safety skills while experiencing different scenic areas around the island. Participating in a kayak excursion or class will allow you to take the kayak safety test and receive UH kayaker certification card, enabling you to rent our kayaks. Excursions are limited to UH students, faculty, staff, and their guests. Transportation and equipment are provided. Participants must be able to swim.

Sailing

This is a great opportunity to learn a great lifetime sport. Classes are taught in 20′ keelboats and include both classroom and on-the-water sessions. Instruction will include basic sailing theory and concentrate on boat handling techniques at Keehi Lagoon. Transportation and equipment are provided. Participants must be able to swim.

Snorkeling

Explore the wonderful marine life that Hawai’i has to offer at Shark’s Cove (North Shore, Oahu). Equipment and transportation provided for the first ten people. Participants MUST be able to swim!

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class

Join our 20-hour Red Cross lifeguard certification course to master essential lifesaving skills and become Red Cross lifeguard certified. The course covers a wide range of topics, from water rescue techniques to first aid and CPR training. To qualify, participants must successfully complete a swim test, which includes treading water for two minutes without hands and swimming with a 5lb weight for 40 meters. The class is 20 hours, and will require students to complete an online section as well. Sign up before October 9 to equip yourself with the knowledge and skills to ensure safety and respond effectively in emergency situations.
