Hydroponics is a important and useful method used to grow plants in Hawaiʻi. Because the islands are geographically isolated and limited in natural resources, residents are dependent on imported goods and thre are high costs associated with business. Hydroponic farming is, therefore, emerging as a sustainable and cost-effective way to grow food locally.

Check out some of the resources below that detail projects around the islands:

  • Kawamata Farms uses hydroponic science in Kamuela, Hawaiʻi to produce over 30,000 pounds of tomatoes a week!
  • Check out Waipoli Hydroponic Greens from Pacific Produce, Inc. to learn more about how they grow about 180,000 plants a year and producing up to 15,000 pounds of specialty lettuces a week - all hydroponically!
  • Waihole Nursery and Garden Center supports all things hydroponics in Kāneʻohe on Oʻahu.
  • Hydroponics and Aquaponics from Edible Hawaiʻi: This article describes some the hydroponic system established at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa in Po‘ipū. It also explores other operations around Hawaiʻi that utilize hydroponic or aquaponic systems.
