We are excited for this line up of speakers for our Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Bookshelf Series! This month we will be hosting current and former Hawaiʻinuiākea students as they showcase how ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is their kāhua in the work they do at UH Mānoa & in the community.
Our Bookshelf series will continue LIVE this Thursday, February 18th with Paige Okamura, Kumu with the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Initiative: Ua Ao Hawaiʻi, who teaches free Hawaiian Language classes every Mondays on Facebook.
Paige Miki Kalāokananikiʻekiʻe Okamura is a keiki papa of Māeaea, Paʻalaʻa, Waialua, Oʻahu. She received her B.A. in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and is currently pursuing her M.A. in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language. Paige is currently the Training Specialist for the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) Pacific Basic Regional Training & Technical Assistance Center (Kaʻānaniau), a DJ at Hawaiʻi Public Radio and KTUH FM Honolulu, and is the kumu alakaʻi for the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi initiative “Ua Ao Hawaiʻi” providing free, non-credit Hawaiian language classes to the public. This initiative began in January 2020 in-person on the UH Mānoa campus with an average attendance of 250-300 people of every demographic imaginable. Once the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the UH campus, the classes moved online to a virtual streaming platform that have an average of over 10,000 views per class, and are still on-going today!

NHSS Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Resources
NHSS has put together a handful of free resources, in collaboration with Kumu Kahanuola of @ehoopilimai, for our community! These resources includes memory card games, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi charades and worksheets put together by our NHSS Outreach team, Kamalei Marrotte & Allyson Franco. The idea of these resources is to encourage all of us to (continue to) learn ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi in fun, interactive ways as well as create resources for our kumu & makua to distribute to our keiki.
To gain access to these resource, please
click here to register and you will be added to our Google folder with all of the resources for Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and more! Please allow us 24-48 hours to add you to this folder. Should you have questions or thoughts, please reach out to Allyson Nuesca Franco at

NHSS Lāhui Hawaiʻi Research Center
4th Annual Student Conference
March 18th-20th, 2021 | Hosted virtually

It is a pleasure to invite you to ‘Ike 2020, a conference organized by the Lāhui Hawaiʻi Research Center under Native Hawaiian Student Services. The conference will take place online via Zoom from March 18-20th. The conference will be half-day on each of the 3 days and will include a range of presentation formats, including keynote presentations and break-out sessions.
This time last year, we sent out a similar announcement with the conference theme ʻIke 2020, inspired by a culmination of events that have caused major shifts in both the political and social landscape of Hawaiʻi. Last year, we hoped our conference would help to illuminate the expanse of Hawaiian knowledge that has facilitated a sense of intellectual clarity among the lāhui, igniting action and invigorating the proliferation of a Hawaiian national consciousness. In this time of rapid change, a commitment to ʻike Hawaiʻi guides our visions of sustainable and just futures for both Hawaiʻi and the world. Today, this theme is still relevant as we reflect back on the huli and hulihia of 2020.
As this year’s theme, ʻIke 2020 is a call for presentations on scholarship that addresses the importance of engaging in kuleana to continue the growth of both Hawaiian knowledge and a Hawaiian national consciousness. This is a call for presentations on scholarship done by undergraduate and graduate students who engage in this kuleana in order to build sustainable futures for the next generations to come. We also invite presentations on scholarship that engage the huli of our time and possibilities for our future.
Although presentations are limited to UH System students and faculty, registration is open to both the UH community and the general Hawaiian community. Registration is free! The first 200 conference registrations will receive a free pin (sent after conference attendance).
