An Improvised Murder Mystery

Late Night Theatre Company presents MURDER AT THE VICTORIAN ESTATE!, a murder mystery and improvised comedy, in the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre on November 29-30 and December 1-2, 2018. The Thursday-Saturday performances begin at 9:30 pm with
the Sunday “matin-eve” beginning at 7:30pm. Tickets range from $5-10 and are sold at the Kennedy Theatre Box Office one hour prior to the start of the performance.
MURDER AT THE VICTORIAN ESTATE! is an original, improvised show inspired by films such as Clue! And Haunted Honeymoon. In true murder mystery fashion, the play is driven by the sudden death of one of the colorful characters. Isolated in the haunting estate, the characters are forced to investigate, leading to chaos, more deaths, and some highly questionable toasts.
UNRAVELING A MONSTROUS CRIME
The young niece of Baroness Bennett is set to be married, but a suitor has yet to be named. Invited to the estate by the Baroness, a host of colorful suitors arrive to try their hand at wooing the lovely niece. But mixing the guests with the household staff quickly leads to mishaps, and when someone is mysteriously murdered, the Detective must intervene and discover who committed this evil affair. Was it Lady Wentworth in the Conservatory with the wrench? Or perhaps Dr. Ramos Igno in the Billiards Room with the lead pipe? Come join in the audience and play a part by not only choosing the murderer, but also providing silly suggestions for everything from famous last words to the character’s signature catchphrases!
LEADING THE CHARGE
Director, Lead Improviser, and Lady-of-the-House Adelaide Winnifred Bennett is Emily Steward, a UH Manōa MFA candidate in Performance. Originally from Ann Arbor, MI, Steward traveled the world studying and teaching improv after receiving her undergraduate degree from Rollins College in Florida. She has trained with groups such as iO in Chicago and the Florida Studio Theatre and spent 6 months teaching improv to high school students 
in San Jose, Costa Rica. She is a founding member of University of Hawaii at Manōa’s improv group The Māno-It-Alls, where she currently serves as Artistic Director.
By her side in this production is Malia Wessel, serving as the Assistant Director and the Butler of the estate. Wessel is a UH Manōa undergraduate theatre major and is also a founding member of the Māno-It-Alls. She has also been a member of previous UH Manōa improv troupes, including Double Improv Rainbows and Da Kine Improv, for which she performed at the San Francisco Improv Festival and Improvaganza.
CREATING THE ILLUSION
The ensemble is composed of a variety of masters and undergraduate students within the theatre department at UH Manōa. Tyler Haugen, MFA candidate in Directing and Performance, plays the absurdly lonely widow Lady Wentworth. Undergraduate theatre major Qalil Ismail plays the slightly mad professor/scientist, Dr. Igno. Dylan Lee, also a theatre undergraduate, plays the Magician and Escape Artist Jörgen Houdin who is rumored to have inspired the great Houdini. Claire Fallon, MFA candidate in Directing, plays the niece of Lady Bennet. TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) MFA candidate Nick Brown plays The American, another hopeful suitor. The final potential suitor is Colonel Knight, played by sophomore Matt Sun. The household maids add to the murderous mix, played by Emma DeMaris and Kela Neil.
Not only a maid, Neil provides an exciting addition to the production as the live Foley artist. Following the action, a Foley artist uses props and objects to create sound effects in real time. Neil says that even though this is her first time using Foley, she is excited about the process. “It’s been really fun researching what people used to make certain sounds in old fashioned radio plays, especially since a lot of the Foley instruments used are everyday household items.”
Join Late Night in creating an evening of absolute merriment. With danger and comedy hiding around every corner, this hair-raisingly scary and belly-achingly hilarious show will be sure to leave you rolling on the floor. As it is entirely improvised, MURDER AT THE VICTORIAN ESTATE! will most likely contain mature themes and adult language. After all, it’s all up to the audience!
