“Justice and Democracy: A Philosophical Exploration”

January 8 – 20, 1995

The Conferences have rejected the popular vision of the philosopher as someone residing in an ivory tower, isolated from the pressing demands of ordinary life. The themes selected for these international forums have tried to encourage significant thinking directed to concerns of a wide human scope.

In accord with the tradition of having the Conferences be an academic forum for addressing vital problems facing humanity, the theme “Justice and Democracy” has been chosen for this Seventh East-West Philosophers’ Conference. As a sign of the times, the directorship has been conferred on a scholar who is a representative of the newly-born democracy in Russia.
