The FBI Honors Internship Program (HIP) was developed to attract high performing undergraduate/graduate students towards career opportunities within the FBI. The HIP is a 10-week, fulltime (40 hours per week), paid internship conducted in the summer. The internship is open to all levels of students with the requirement that the applicant be in a fulltime student status (in an undergraduate, graduate, law school or PhD program) at all times prior to the start of the internship. Also, the student cannot graduate prior to the start of the internship and must return to their program for at least one semester.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible:

  • Be a US citizen
  • Attend a college or university fulltime as an undergraduate (sophomore, junior or senior), graduate or post-doctoral student. Students are not eligible if they will graduate before the program start date; exceptions are permitted to students continuing their education in the semester immediately following
  • Have and maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better at the time of application, throughout the application process and for the duration of the internship program
  • Pass all of the FBI employment background investigation requirements and be able to receive a Top Secret Clearance (to include a polygraph examination, drug test, criminal record check and background investigation)

Compensation for Interns

The HIP is a paid internship with a different scale based on the level of academic achievement and a locality increase depending on the office of assignment.

  • For interns who have already obtained a bachelor’s degree and are enrolled in a graduate, law school or PhD program, the pay is a GS-5 (approximately $15 per hour).
  • For interns who are enrolled in an undergraduate program, the pay is a GS-4 (approximately $13 per hour).
  • Interns earn Annual and Sick Leave while working in the fulltime status.
  • Interns are also eligible to receive school credits for the summer, depending on the guidelines from their institution.

Placement for Interns

Students are able to select multiple locations for consideration but will be responsible for their own living and travel expenses during the internship. Possible internship locations include:

  • 56 field offices
  • FBIHQ in Washington, DC
  • FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia
  • FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia
  • Operational Technology Division in Quantico, Virginia

Post Internship Opportunity

Upon successful completion of the 10-week summer HIP, interns may be retained during the school year in an intermittent status (16 hours per month). The decision to retain high performing interns is based on performance, attitude and evaluation from their summer experience.

Once the intern has graduated and obtained their degree, there are opportunities for direct hire selection for entry level fulltime positions with the FBI.
