About

The Warrior Recreation Center (WRC) was built to give the general student body a place to exercise. It was completed in 2014 by Ushijima Architects. The name references the University’s mascot, the Rainbow Warrior, which is the third iteration of the mascot.

Additional Information

Previously, athletes and non-athletes had shared the same facilities, and non-athlete students were often unable to use the lower campus facilities. The two story facility includes an indoor track, strength machines, cardio space, basketball and volleyball courts, restrooms, and locker room space. There was some opposition to its construction as the second oldest building in the history of the UH system, the Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory, had to be torn down to clear the site for the WRC.

The Warrior Recreation Center forms the north side of the Campus Center courtyard, and faces a large Monkeypod tree.

The Warrior Recreation Center (WRC) has an LEED Gold Certification, rewarded for the several efficiency features implemented in its construction. The WRC has photovoltaic panels that generate 48,180 kWh each year, as well as a solar thermal hot water system for locker room showers. It uses natural daylighting in partnership with exterior light shelves to reduce solar heat gain while reducing glare. An LED lighting system with occupancy and daylight controls improves energy efficiency, which is further supplemented by a high efficiency split HVAC for supplemental cooling.
