About

Saunders Hall was built in 1974, but was renamed in 2002 after Allan and Marian Saunders. Allan Saunders was a professor at the University and his wife Marian worked in government and advocacy. It was built by architect Vladimir Ossipoff who also designed Bachman and Snyder Hall. It was constructed by the Allied Construction Company.

Additional Information

Saunders Hall was renamed after Allan and Marion Saunders in 2002. Allan Saunders was a professor at UH Mānoa who was well known for his civil advocacy. He is credited with starting the Hawaiʻi chapters of the League of American Women Voters, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the American Association of the United Nation. He also is known for advocating for the right of UH professors to wear the Aloha shirt. UH originally mandated that professors wear neckties and coats, and the Aloha shirt was banned. He created an organization called, “Faculty Wearers of Aloha Shirts” and today faculty are allowed to wear Aloha attire if they desire, and no one is forced to wear a necktie. Marion Saunders had a lifelong career in government and advocacy, often pairing the two. She served on the Board of Education from 1974-1980 and was the U.S. Interior Departmentʻs coordinator for Micronesian students in Hawaiʻi.

Saunders Hall has an enclosed courtyard with a seating area that contains three Pelagodoxa henryana (a type of palm), which is the only species in the genus Pelagodoxa.
