About

George Hall was built in 1925 by architect Arthur Reynolds. It was named after William H. George, Dean of the College of Arts and Science from 1930-1939. It is built in the Neo-Classical style to match the other buildings in the Quad.

Additional Information

George Hall was originally built as the University’s first library, though student dances were also held in the lobby because there was no gym or auditorium at the time. It was also the second building to receive electric lighting on campus, after Hawaiʻi Hall. After it transitioned into classroom and office space in 1956, it housed the European Languages Department and the Art Department’s exhibition gallery, becoming home to the first language laboratory on campus. Later, George Hall would house the Travel Industry Management Department and Speech Department.

George Hall encircles a large Monkeypod Tree which is the centerpiece of the courtyard that is ringed with Caribbean Royal Palm, Monstera, niu (coconut palm), and kalo (taro).

George Hall was remodeled by Hayden Phillips in 1956 when it transitioned from a library to office and classroom space.
