About

Bachman Hall, originally named the Administration Building, was designed by Architect Vladimir Ossoff and named after the 5th president of the University, Paul S. Bachman. The building was completed in 1949, though recent extensive renovations were completed in 2024.

Additional Information

Bachman Hall has been the site of several protests over the decades due to its housing the President’s Office. In 1968, students and faculty staged a ten day sit-in protest of the Vietnam War and University governance, leading students to raise a banner calling the building “Liberation Hall.” Another protest in 1995 was organized by faculty and featured a staged march and teach-in to protest a nine-million appropriation cut that then Governor Benjamin Cayetano proposed, which would have threatened some University programs. In 2005, students, faculty, and other supporters organized a seven day sit-in at the President’s Office against a proposed Navy funded University Affiliated Research Center. A year later in 2006, protests occurred in March and April against the University’s genetic tampering and patenting of the taro plant. One of the most recent protests in 2019 saw students and faculty protesting the Thirty Meter Telescope, occupying the building for 117 days—the longest sit-in in the history of the University.

The courtyard of Bachman contains a variety of plants including several maiʻa (banana), niu (coconut), and ʻuala (sweet potato).
