About

Crawford Hall opened for classes in the Fall of 1938. It was designed and constructed by Professor John Mason Young, who kept it in the Neo-Classical style to match the other buildings in the Quad. It was renamed after the 3rd President of the University, David Livingston Crawford.

Additional Information

UH President David Crawford was known for being one of the youngest presidents at any university in the United States. He also created the UH summer school program that became one of the largest in the U.S. The building initially housed the “Shunzo Sakamaki Library-Lounge” which was dedicated in 1975 in honor of the historian and summer session dean who died in 1973.

The mauka entrance of Crawford Hall has a walkway shaded with Cliff Date Palms and Chinese Fan Palms, with Monkey Grass as a ground covering. ʻĀkia frames the entrance from the Quad.
