AEP Seminar – Dr. Dilmurat Azimov

Dilmurat Azimov

[Announcement] Dr. Dilmurat Azimov from the University of Hawaii at Manoa will give a virtual talk titled: “Integrated Onboard and Real-Time Targeting, Guidance, Navigation and Control Functions for Autonomous Aerospace Systems” on Thursday, September 17, 15:00-16:00 HST. Zoom: https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/99861316992

Abstract – The goals for space exploration suggest the development of new fundamental concepts and methods for design and implementation of on-board flight software systems. This talk will focus on the guidance, navigation and control (GNC) systems that enable aerospace vehicles with new capabilities, such as real-time targeting and re-targeting. Ongoing research and its results as well as the future studies in the design and development of integrated targeting, guid- ance, navigation and control (TGNC) functions and systems for a wide range of automatic aerospace maneuvers are outlined. The recent results demonstrate the advantages of the TGNC systems compared to conventional GNC systems of various flight vehicles, benefits of application of optimal control solutions, increased autonomy of flight vehicles, efficiency of the maneuvers, and advanced mission characteristics enabled by the proposed systems. Potential research problems in the design, development and validation of such systems are discussed.

Dr. Dilmurat Azimov works in the areas of trajectory optimization, guidance, navigation and control of flight vehicles, optimal control and orbit determination using observations. His expertise includes derivation of the analytical solutions for optimal control problems, and their application in mission design, development and implementation of guidance, control and targeting schemes. He received his PhD in “Mechanics” from the University of Peoples Friendship in Moscow in 1992, and his DSc in “Dynamics, Ballistics and Flight Vehicle Control” from Moscow Aviation Institute in 2008. In 1999-2011, he served as Research Fellow, Research Engineer and Scientist Associate for the University of Texas at Austin. From 2008 to 2009 he briefly worked as Guidance, Navigation and Control Engineer at Emergent Space Technologies, Inc. In 2012 he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Since July of 2018 Dilmurat Azimov has been serving as an Associate Professor of the same Department.
