The Language Flagship represents a nationwide effort to revolutionize the way Americans learn foreign languages. Mandarin Chinese was identified as one of the seven such languages chosen by the national Language Flagship organization based in Washington, D.C. — resulting in the establishment of thirteen programs in Chinese across the country for undergraduate students to pursue a higher command of Mandarin Chinese to become global professionals and cultural ambassadors between the United States and Greater China.

The Language Flagship is a public/private partnership sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) of the Department of Defense and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
