Rosalie Silberman Abella

Renowned jurist Rosalie Silberman Abella was a justice on Canada’s Supreme Court from 2004-2021. She is known for her path-breaking decisions on racial and gender justice, employment equity, disability, national security, and First Nations rights. Abella has 42 honorary degrees, and she is an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. The daughter of Holocaust survivors and a refugee herself, Abella became the youngest judge in Canadian history and the first Jewish woman appointed to the nation’s highest court. Her life is the subject of the PBS documentary Without Precedent.
