Her essays and stories have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Granta,  Gettysburg Review, Massachusetts Review, and others. She has been awarded the Rome Prize, the PEN/Open Book Award, and two Philippine National Book Awards. She grew up in Tacloban, Leyte, in the Philippines, and lives in New York and western Massachusetts. Apostol is the Spring 2024 Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals.
