Blanche McMillan

Blanche McMillan has been caring for others her whole life, both as a healing arts professional and a parent. She and her husband raised 8 biological and adopted children, and cared for 20 foster children over the years. For nine years, McMillan served as outreach coordinator for the Saint George food bank in Waimanalo. As she wondered about how best to help, she had visions of the plentiful life of her ancestors on the land.  When the pandemic struck, McMillan heard the call to bring the homeless off Waimanalo Beach to a safe place behind her family home. Marshaling the support of her local Waimanalo community, as well as many other well-wishers on the island, she managed to get a number of tiny houses built or donated to open the kauhale: Hui Mahiaʻi ‘Āina. Now in a haven of protection, residents help to create and tend the garden and aquaponics, prepare food, clean, provide security, run a food bank and give back to the rest of the community.
