Abstracts:

Tasan Chŏng Yagyong (1762-1836) believed that many of the core assumptions of Neo-Confucian philosophy made it more difficult for men and women to develop the ability to act the way they knew they should act. He proposed an alternative understanding of human nature and virtue. This talk will introduce some of Tasan’s practical tips on how to be moral.

- Professor of Korean Civilization, Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia.

-Dr. Baker was Involved with Korea since 1971, and he has published extensively on religion, philosophy, and traditional science in Korea. His latest book is A Korean Confucian’s Advice on How to Be Moral: Tasan Chŏng Yagyong’s Reading of the Zhongyong (University of Hawai’i Press, 2023).
