I've been struggling with this activity too - my students are ELL and pretty concrete in their thinking. I've been working to make this clearer, but I wouldn't say I'm satisfied yet. In some of the materials discipline was described as practices, verbs that show actions scientists value. I don't think that is exactly "discipline" but it did make the task more accessible to my students. They had very few answers but were able to mention actions we had previously taken in class. I don't think they gave any answers from things they believe "professional" or "movie/television" scientists do. The pictures were mostly safety or lab equipment related.
