Scientific language - toughest word?

Which of the scientific language words from the target activity did you find your students had the most difficult time with?

Seemed to me that they got hung up on the difference between a theory and a law. I had trouble explaining the difference because I think i had been taught that the difference was that a law was a theory that had been tested to the point that it no longer required testing or modification. My explanation made things worse when they did the reading and got a different explanation. Looking back on it I'm sure that I screwed up and just didn't understand my teachers back in the day. It wasn't until we read that theories explain laws and laws can make predictions did everything start to make better sense.

Kevin, I think you are right about the tough choice between theory and law. So many people use the word "theory" to mean opinion, as in "my theory is..." The scientific meaning is more specific. I had trouble with the word "law" because this is also a very common place word...and many of us break laws, so can scientific laws be broken?
